Remove iTunes Duplicates – 3 Strategies

Do the songs in your iTunes library come from different sources? Well, if you are like most people, I bet they do.

And therefore, like many of us out there, you probably have duplicates. Which is not always that big of a problem, but can also be slightly irritating: you are exercising at the gym or running outside with your iPod on, and the same song keeps coming up; you are at home putting your clothes on and getting ready to go to work or university, you are kind of in a hurry, and the same song keeps playing again.

If you want to get rid of this, it’s pretty easy: there are basically three ways to remove duplicates from iTunes.

You decide to go for it manually – my advice: this is just if you don’t have that many duplicates! I currently have iTunes 10.1.1, so what I’m describing here is based on this version, but it’s probably very similar on other versions. In your iTunes, click on “File” on the top left, and then on “Display duplicates”. iTunes will display only the songs that are duplicates. You can then compare if you have the same versions: sometimes, you may have downloaded only an excerpt of the song, or the genre displayed might not be the same, or you may have a live (like on Daytrotter) vs. a regular studio recorded version. If you want more information about the song, you can right-click on it, and a window will pop up with additional information, like the quality of the song, the kind of file etc. You can then go from one duplicate to another from this window, you don’t have to go back to the list and right-click on every song to have the info window pop up. From there, you are pretty free to decide which duplicate you would like to get rid of, and which one you’d rather keep. As you may imagine, this process is the less time- and money-consuming if you only have a few duplicates. Extra-tip: try display the duplicates in your iTunes library just to check how many of them you have; from there on, you can decide to go for a software that will spare you the manual process!

You decide to go for a software that allows you to do it automatically – my advice: go for Tidysongs, definitely the best software to offer this unique feature! I truly don’t know of any other software doing the job of automatically removing the duplicates in your iTunes library as best as Tidysongs! The software is very easy to use: you download it and when you launched it, it’s pretty intuitive: you just choose among the three options offered:

Fix your songs

Find duplicates

Organize genres

You decide to go for a software that allows you to keep an eye on how it’s being done, so that you remain in control – my advice: here again, go for Tidysongs! That’s something I really appreciate with Tidysongs: it’s meant to allow you to have everything done automatically, but you don’t have too. You can semi-automatize the process. You can ask Tidysongs to put all the duplicates in a chosen file, and then check yourself whether you agree with what the software picked up.
